When it comes to adults only resorts in the Cancun Hotel Zone this is my favorite. I like it because it is high class yet right down the middle. The lower priced Golden Parnassus is lacking in some areas that The Royal in Cancun does not. Le Blanc is more expensive and it is a spa resort so unless you like a lot of relaxation that place is not for you. The brand new Sun Palace has very few room types. This resort is a happy medium amongst all of the competition. That is why I like it so much.

This resort was built to copy the decor, theme and atmosphere of their newly renovated sister resort The Royal in Playa del Carmen. When considering this resort you should consider their sister resort and vice versa. You should read my review of both resorts. Their rooms are very well decorated with the same huge Jacuzzi in the rooms. The restaurants are the same restaurants with the same menus. You cannot go wrong with either of these resorts.

The major differences between The Royal in Cancun and The Royal in Playa del Carmen are number of rooms, restaurant size, and location. The Royal in Playa del Carmen has almost half the number of rooms at the Royal in Playa del Carmen. The restaurants in Playa del Carmen are a bit bigger. For example, Chefs Plate, their gourmet restaurant, has about twice as many tables in Playa del Carmen. This is because the resort in Playa del Carmen has 200 more rooms. Both resorts are in prime locations. Cancun is right across the street from Plaza la Isla which is a huge shopping mall. It has all kinds of shops and restaurants. Night life is not too far either. In Playa del Carmen you can walk to all the shops of 5th Avenue which is a street only accessible to foot traffic. There is a lot of night life and shopping on and around 5th Avenue but it is on a much smaller scale than Cancun.

The rooms are slightly different as well. In Cancun all rooms are ocean view where in Playa del Carmen the lowest room category is garden view. The swim-up rooms in Cancun lead into a plunge pool. In Playa you can swim to the swim up bar. The second room category at each hotel is Royal Service and so are all the higher room categories. As you go up in room categories your bathroom amenities are upgraded. Also some rooms come with a one hour rental of a Mini Cooper. The highest room category at each resort comes with unlimited free local and international calling. Please be sure to check out their web page and read up on Royal Service to see all the added amenities.

Reasons why you would book this resort : You are looking for an adults only resort that is not overly romantic. You want the shopping and night life of Cancun close by.

Reasons why you would not book this resort : You are taking your kids on this vacation. You are going to book their sister resort in Playa del Carmen.
