If you know me then you know I am a huge fan of Riu Hotels and Resorts. This resort is no exception. It has all that you can be looking for out of a vacation to the Riviera Maya. Things I like about this resort is the complex atmosphere, the location and the fact that is it a Riu.

In the Riviera Maya Riu has a complex of five resorts. The Riu Palace Mexico is the center of it all. When you stay at the Riu Palace Mexico you can go to all of them and have full exchange privileges except for at the Palace Riviera Maya and dinner at another resort. Dinner is always at your resort no matter which one you stay at. If you are in the lobby facing the beach the Riu Yucatan is to your right. The Riu Playacar is top your left. The Riu Tequila is behind you. The Riu Palace Riviera Maya is a five minute walk to your left (north). Each resort has its own charm to it. The Playacar and the Yucatan are Riu hotels and are good for everyone. The Tequila is a Riu Club Hotel which means this is the party spot. It is not on the beach and shares a beach with the Riu Yucatan or Playacar. If you are looking for night life the Plaza Bar at the Riu Tequila is where it is at. There you can find people mingling over shots of tequila, champagne and flaming shots of something sure to make you feel it in the morning. Riu Palaces are all about class. The lobby of the Riu Palace Mexico has a bar with a guy playing piano at night. So by staying at the Riu Palace Mexico you have the best in class but the atmosphere at them all.

The Riu Complex in the Riviera Maya is located in a neighborhood called Playacar. It is five minutes south of Playa del Carmen. Playa del Carmen is the biggest city in the Riviera Maya and is home to all the shopping and night life. You can also catch the ferry to Cozumel from Playa del Carmen. The five minute cab ride from Playacar to Playa del Carmen is $5 per cab no matter what time of day it is. This is the standard rate negotiated by the city and the taxi union. Playacar is home to about 12 resorts ranging from economical family to high end adults only resorts. On your drive to the resort once you turn into Playacar you will see the golf course, some small Mayan Ruins and some really beautiful homes and condos that start at $500k. With that said Playacar, like all parts of Cancun and the Riviera Maya, is very safe.

Riu Resorts no matter where you go mean class, quality, fun and a great value. The Riu Palace Mexico is no exception. I have stayed at this resort before I moved to Cancun and I fell in love with it. I cannot say it is my favorite but it is certainly up there. Playacar has a great beach that is about 50 feet from grass to sand. The sand in Playacar is very soft. For a beach volleyball enthusiast such as myself this is very important because it just isn't fun unless you can dive and know you are not going to get cut by rocks or shells. With dinner options such as Brazillian, Steak House, Gourmet and more you'll have plenty of options. With over 15 bars through the complex including the sports bar and disco at the Riu Tequila you have plenty of places to mingle. The rooms are same as at the Riu Palace Las Americas and the Riu Palace Riviera Maya. They are all junior suites with a mini bar and a top shelf liquor dispenser. Trust me vacation here and you will not be disappointed.

Reasons to book this resort: You are looking for an upscale famy resort with a laid back atmosphere at night. You want the option of other resorts within walking distance that can offer a more high energy atmosphere. You want to be close to Playa del Carmen for shopping and nightlife.

Reasons not to book this resort: You are looking for an adults only resort. You are looking for something more secluded. You are going to book one of the other Riu Resorts.
