Riu Palace Punta Cana
(Punta Cana)
Bavaro Beach, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
Web Site:
Rooms: Year Built:
Floors: Last Renovated:
Pools: Restaurants:
Room Service: Yes

This is a traditional Riu Palace. The décor of the resort is of that of an old castle in Europe. It is set up the same as many Riu Resorts in a U shape. Going around the base of the wings are restaurants, the spa and the theatre. They have four room types: junior suite, superior junior suite, suite and Jacuzzi suite. The junior suites are all the same. The regular ones are garden view. The superiors have a pool/courtyard view. The suites and Jacuzzi suites are the same as well except the Jacuzzi suites have a Jacuzzi on their balcony. They have more than double the square footage as a junior suite.

The pool at this resort is better in my opinion that that are the Riu Palace Bavaro. The shape of it makes it more sociable. It has a nice wrap around swim up bar, jacuzzis, place for people to lay in the water and a second infinity pool that overlooks the main pool. That is how I got the two pools one shot photo. The rooms here are like those of many Riu Palaces. Going down a room block you have little hall ways where the rooms are. You go down that hall way (only like 8 feet) and there is a room to the right and a room to the left. Some hall ways have a door before you get to the other doors. So if you have both rooms you can close the first door and keep the other two open. Now you have connecting rooms.

This resort is located on Bavaro Beach and has a great beach just like all the other resorts on this beach. It is also attached the other Riu Resorts. You have share privileges with the Naioba. I am not sure about the Palace Mecao as it is adults only and currently under renovation. If you do get privileges once it opens kids will not be able to go there. I know for sure that going to the Palace Bavaro is not an option.

In between the Mecao and the Palace Bavaro there is a street of shops that you have access to. Do not expect any deals here just as you wouldn’t expect a deal in a hotels gift shop which is basically what these are. On that same street is a night club which is a cash bar. I do not like this policy but it is very common in the Dominican Republic to charge for drinks in the night club. Prices of some things are bit high but beer is pretty cheap. For $5 you can get a 650 ml Presidente which is the preferred local beer. They also have a casino which is in the Mecao. They have 3 black jack tables, a roulette table, a couple of poker tables (Caribbean), a Texas hold’em table, a tournament table and some slot machines ranging from 5 cents to $1. Every night except Sunday at 10:30 they have either as black jack tournament or a Texas hold’em tournament. The way it works is they will have 7 people play at a time and they will play 7 hands. At the end of those hands either 2 or 3 people will move on to the final round depending on how many people they have playing. Then the finalist will play 7 hands and then the top three win. First place gets $100, second place gets $50 and then third place gets $25. This is not real money. This is house money. Let’s say you win and then you go play a game. If you were to bet all of it on one hand and win you get that vale in real money and the house money is taken by the house. If you lose well the house got their money back so either way they get their money but you do have the opportunity to win real money. I highly suggest going and playing in the tournament because even if you lose you just had fun for 30 to 45 minutes and met some new people. Best of all you haven’t spent a dime. Just take a drink with you because the free booze is just for people betting real money.

At the end of the Caribbean Street there is a restaurant and bar that is part of the Riu Niaoba. This is good for you as a guest here because as you are walking the beach and run low on drink you can refill here.

Reasons to book this resort: You are looking for a great value in a family friendly but not too family friendly resort. You have been to other Riu Palace Resorts and want the same experience in a new destination.

Reasons not to book this resort: You are looking for an adults only resort. You are looking for a resort that is more kids friendly and has the facilities to back it up.
